The Studies of Society and Environment (SOSE) is a study of human progress and how people have organised themselves into societies over time, and how they have interacted with their physical environments. SOSE comprises the strands of History, Geography, and Economy and society. St. Mark’s SOSE curriculum examines how humans organise themselves into communities and states to form institutions and systems. The curriculum focuses on the study of societies at local, national and international level, which is critical for young people to develop an understanding of their world and its historical development.

Some emphasis is placed in providing a framework for developing student knowledge of Australia and Asia-Pacific region’s society past and present, and of their urban and natural environments, which extends to also cover the global perspective.

The knowledge, skills and values students acquire in this study enable them to participate as confident, responsible and active citizens in a democratic society which functions in a global context. Students will gain a broad knowledge of the society, becoming well-informed citizens who would be able to form judgments and make critical decisions affecting the society in which they live.

SOSE also encompasses the study of the natural and built surroundings that provide the physical context for social processes and cultural development. It examines the nature and interdependence of environments and people. Through SOSE, students will learn to develop respect and care for the environment.
