Character is what a person is inside. Our character is revealed by how we act when we think no one else is looking. It is how we treat people who we think can not help or hurt us. A person of character has good ethical values that distinguish right from wrong and a strong commitment to do what is right even when it is inconvenient, uncomfortable, or personally costly. Good character does not develop spontaneously. Rather, it is the result of conscientious efforts to instill and reinforce ethical values in a way that makes them second nature. This sense of right and wrong is often referred to as the conscience.
Our Character Education program is not a subject, but rather a culture, which our school tries to instill in our students. There are six area of character development framework:
1. Trustworthiness – being honest and telling the truth
2. Respect – being polite and courteous, accepts differences in others
3. Responsibility – accept consequences of one’s action and work to one’s
best ability
4. Fairness – observe rules, takes turns, share, listens and does not blame
others unjustly.
5. Caring – being kind, compassionate, considerate and shows concern for
the feelings of others.
6. Citizenship – do their share to help families and communities, obey rules,
cooperate with others, respect parents, teachers, and others in
authority, at the same time, protect the environment.
Character Education is a whole school development program which focuses on students’ development of good character traits and involves discussion and activities which students are required to participate. |
